some halochos of "the 9 days" (or the week of Tisha beav)
we all know about רחיצה & סיכה .it is prohibited on Tisha Beav ,and we extend it from the beginning of Av.
What is סיכה? we find in shas, two different functions and meanings. One was done prior to bathing --it was like modern "soap" ,it was followed by various baths and scraping ,finally when dry a second application of anointment --fragrant oils-- was rubbed all over (modern scented deodorant) to "smell good"
for the first סיכה see :Tosefta Shabos 16,Yerush Sheviis 8,Yerush Shabos 2,
for the second and more commonly mentioned: Derech Eretz Rab 10, Avos Dr'n 41,Der Ere Zut 7, Ruth 3, Yechez 16, Mishna Sanhed 7,
A Talmid Chacham should not overdo this one ,(it might be a sign of following Roman Mishkav Zachar)
now, sometimes סיכה was done to cover up offensive smells --instead of "taking a shower" they would "cover up the stench" ..this is prohibited on Yom kippur
אפילו סיכה שאינו של תענוג,ושרי רק חטטין בראשו=רפואה
However on Tisha Beav it is אסור only של תענוג עיין רמבם שמביא חילוק זה .
certainly on the "9 days" you may put deodorant to "cover up your offensive smell"
but otherwise it is likely the modern equivalent of סיכה
רחיצה is prohibited ,the only possible היתר is מלוכלך בטיט או בצואה ,"lots of sweating" is definitely not a good reason to permit רחיצה (be sure that the אמוראים also sweated alot!)
