as a boy i went to satmar yeshiva also i davened in their schul, my father & shver were one of his many Hasidim, let me point out some of my thoughts.
the most important thing --and maybe the only thing-- to remember about the Rabbi & try to emulate is :a person is here to toil אדם לעמל יולד that's it. unfortunately the שטן shows us all the כבוד מלכים that the Rabbi received, & we feel good having him as an idol & shouting אלה אלוהיך ישראל ,dancing & slaughtering many sacrifices for him.
In reality, when the Rabbi was 20 years old, he was sitting late in the night & early in the morning, toiling in Torah with endless enthusiasm ,forcing his eyes open, davening with great כוונה .very hard training and discipline. He was not sure about his future & could not do it as an investment-remember, without tremendous discipline he would give up, it is too boring & extra hard work- definitely not a requirement for his "job" back then.
When you watch an athlete preforming all kinds of amazing stunts, admire him ,yes , he did it to gain כבוד but how much self restraint & discipline- how many pleasures has he withheld to get where he is.Now let's assume that the rebbe davened & studied with extreme discipline & sacrifice just for gaining כבוד .how great is this! are we so blind to דברי חז,ל לעולם יעסוק אדם בתורה ובמצוות שלא לשמה .?so here is a very smart trick on the שטן :learn torah that people shall see, impress people, make a big סיום & tell everyone that you are planning to make another one in a few months, make it your business to learn in your house to impress your wife (it has other benefits too...)-provided it does not interfere with the quality ,publish a ספר with חידושים ,in short do any trick to give you a "incentive" to do good things.
to sum up the rebbe, certainly went through lots and lots of tough times and each hardship in life made him greater. this is the message to learn and teach our children, tell them that the rebbe had no children-he could of been depressed and passive,he lost his Daughter, etc. I am sure he worked on his מדות very hard, he fell but prevailed again and again,
his wife yelled but he was שומע חרפתו ושותק .
now i have for you a big surprise: what was his greatest "test" in life , the biggest obstacle that he needed the most energy to fight? and constantly until his grave.(we assume that he was עומד in this toughly!)
the answer will shock you, but is nevertheless as true as day:the נסיון of גאווה . When he finally "achieved" his position and gained many חסידים that bowed to him and showered him with anything he wished, --that same moment he finally reached the most dangerous point in life to quote the חובת הלבבות:שבתם מן המלחמה הקטנה ובאתם אל מלחמה הגדולה ,now the real מלחמת היצר & the real "hard toil in life" just started.Every time people ask him advice he has the opportunity to really help them, or just to show off . He can demand things to be מטיל אימה יתירה על הצבור or לשם שמים .In short if we think that what we are doing is "hard work" we don't begin to understand the "hard work" of a פרנס על הצבור. it is so easy for him to become the lowest of low, if he is not on constant guard.
So let us be happy with our "hard work" & thank Hashem that he is giving us the opportunity to toil in his world לעבדה ולשמרה
