so if asked are are our laws of torah we based on a "primitive"( whatever that may evoke in your mind, positive or negative) society? the answer is a definite YES.Moreover, we must study & understand and ponder on ancient lifestyles to fully appreciate a Mishnah or Gemara--but don't waste too much time--When you are learning about a field of wheat , an ox goring covering A pot on shaabos, please have a concrete picture of it, use you imagination --a must for any attempt of real learning torah. Do not try to "interpret" it to modern life-- a unfortunate common error--don't "apply" your learning to any common modern situation, you are %99 on the wrong track ,by jumping to "Lemayseh", you will never understand the real mishnah--in its own setting and context,Learn to appreciate the Mishna "As is" (just like you signed in your lease...-But live it through, think about how can a hot pot of cholent (i assume they also had beans...or cabbage with meat)be affected by covering it and sealing it thoroughly.
Now imagine a clay oven -lots of pic. available- that can reach very high temp.,when heated with coals, and even after removing all coals you can bake in it,a practice common even on weekdays,.Now the Mishnah is telling us a Kirah- a kind of small oven- if "cooled off"-albeit slightly and insignificantly-- you may place your food on it before shaabos,to have hot cooked food on shaabos morning, there was a special "bell" "alarm" to remind you when to do this .
After many years of satisfying yourself with "just" understanding exactly what the mishna is trying to tell you, you feel that you are the life of the mishnah is just as Real as the life of cell-phones, you may dare to "apply" the mishnah to modern life...It must be a natural outcome and you can not invest too much time, lest you forget what real torah is all about,
